SuperEdge Multi-Node Server and Edge Applications Introduced By Supermicro

Business News News February 28th 2022

Supermicro recently announced the launch of a new short-depth multi-node system that leverages the data center’s efficiency for 5G, IoT, and Edge Applications. This SuperEdge server is best suited for on-site businesses like retail, branch offices, or fields sites such as the base of cell towers or heavy traffic regions, where a high-density of computing and I/O are required but in a compact form factor.

What is a SuperEdge Server?

The newly launched Supermicro SuperEdge server has put data center processing capability to the edge by leveraging a 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable CPU in each node. This will provide a faster performance to analyze the real-time application capabilities. According to Supermicro, the SuperEdge server will boost density by 50% for 5G, IoT, and Edge applications which is far above the prior application-optimized servers. Clients will have complete freedom to start with only one server and if they like it and wish to expand the business then they can scale it later.

Charles Lian, President, and CEO at Supermicro said, “The SuperEdge server is designed to increase the compute and I/O densities for edge applications and it will enable operations to increase the workloads and data processing performed at the edge by reducing network traffic back to data centers”. He further added, “our IT solution strategy and designing team, has designed applications and turned servers for both the edge. Also, the cloud optimizes the deployment of network computing, as we move to the metaverse”.

Why Edge Computing Applications?

The Supermicro SuperEdge server is supposed to use in tiny data centers or in situations where the service dept is very crucial. The SuperEdge server system would be an easy way to install in a variety of physical locations in the limited space, with a depth of 430mm. GPU can also be deployed, which allows Supermicro SuperEdge to perform AI computations at the network’s edge, which will improve decision making and lower the reaction time.

The nodes and I/O connections can easily be accessed from the front, which is easy for maintenance. This server can work effortlessly in temperatures ranging from -5°C to 55°C, and also in a broad variety of humidity and other environmental conditions. Just by installing the server in diverse places that aren’t always controlled by climate, businesses can save huge money on OPEX.

The server comes with three PCI-E 4.0 slots, that are available on three hot-swappable nodes, which allows a wide selection of add-on cards to speed edge computing applications. Various accelerators cards like networking, FPGA, DPU, eASIC, and TimeSync can be used as the system has high I/O density. The easy node can easily hold up to 2TB of DDR4 DRAM, which enables the installation and execution of more vast and complicated applications possible.
